If you have problems changing your life, the first step to take is realizing that you are not alone. All sorts of people are afraid of change, even successful ones who seem happy enough. As a matter of fact, some researchers say that resistance to change is actually good for us because it helps keep our lives stable and secure.
Still, how many times have you thought about making positive changes in your own life, only to back away from them at the last minute? If this sounds familiar, don’t give up hope yet! Changing an entire lifestyle can be difficult but by following these simple steps you will find yourself getting ahead with little effort on your part. You deserve happiness and no one else can make this happen for you.
It’s important to understand where your reluctance comes from in order to deal with it. Is it fear of failure? Do you think that you will lose out on something if you try and fail? Or do you simply lack the confidence in yourself that you could succeed at anything meaningful?
Whatever is causing your fear, it’s essential to find a way around this problem right away because by not taking action, change cannot occur. Start small and identify one or two things you can accomplish within a short time frame.
Make sure that when tackling any new goal in life, such as quitting smoking, for example, you set yourself up for success. Don’t just focus on quitting, think about how much better your life will be when you do quit.
Keep in mind that it’s easy to slip back into bad habits without proper support, so consider creating a reward system for yourself. For example, if you manage to stay smoke-free for six months, reward yourself. Go shopping or take a trip somewhere nice. This is an excellent way to keep yourself motivated and focused on the positive aspects of change.
Sometimes, even if we’ve resolved to create change in our lives, our old ways can come back to haunt us when we least expect them to. Once you understand what might cause you to revert back to old behaviors, it will be easier for you to avoid them. By creating new habits and associations with respect to these places and people, they won’t have the same power over your life anymore.
Finding success stories that relate very closely to our own lives is one of the best ways to stay motivated towards achieving change. Role models can be found all around us, including TV personalities, successful entrepreneurs, and even family members who have managed to overcome hardships in their past.
