Searching for Happiness This Holiday Season

The holiday season brings up many emotions, and not all of them are positive. If you are feeling more exhausted and anxious this month than calm and joyful, it’s okay. You aren’t alone. The majority of us are living in between feeling jolly and stressed out during this busy month. If you are searching for happiness this holiday season, here are a few tips that may work for you.

Give Up Expectations
Those greeting card perfect holiday scenes, full of freshly fallen snow and golden brown cookies right from the oven? Those are merely fiction compared to real life. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your holiday has to be perfect to be meaningful. Instead, accept the fact that your cookies may burn and your brother will surely be late for dinner (like always). Your holiday doesn’t have to be perfect to be yours.

Say No to What Doesn’t Serve You
If you are going to feel more stressed out about going to your third office party of the week, say “no thanks” and choose to spend your time in a way that makes you feel good. It can be easy to accept every dinner invitation or to attend every holiday event, but this can lead to feeling too busy to enjoy the season. Don’t be afraid to say no this year.

Stick to a Budget
The holidays can become extra stressful when you start spending money you don’t have. This year, commit to a budget for holiday spending and stick to it. Homemade gifts or a simple card are meaningful and will keep you out of credit card debt come January 1.

Volunteer or Serve Others
Nothing makes you feel as good as giving back to a charity close to your heart. This year, make it a priority to give your time or talents to a local agency who serves a vulnerable population. Even better, make appointments to help throughout 2019 and not just during the holiday season.
