Intuition is a powerful thing, and it can give you a lot of information if you let it. However, too many people let doubt creep in. They talk themselves out of something good, into something bad, or end up blowing up an opportunity because they ignored what their intuition was telling them.
This is self-sabotage, and learning how to identify it can help you use what your intuition gives you without all the self-doubt.
Before we talk about stopping the self-sabotage, it helps to know what an intuitive hit is. It’s slightly different for everyone. Sometimes it’s a sense that something’s right or wrong that doesn’t come from logical thought.
Where intuitive hits tend to be subtle, self-sabotage is often loud and full of negative emotions (think fear, embarrassment, shame, or pressure).
Here are ways self-sabotage shows up after an intuitive hit:
Figuring out whether you’re self-sabotaging an intuitive hit or just doing your due diligence before acting isn’t always easy. The best way is to check in with yourself about how you feel at the time. Do you feel calm? Do you feel anxious? Do you feel frantic?
Ask yourself if what you’re feeling helps you move forward, forces you backward, or keeps you stuck in the same spot. Intuition helps you progress, while self-sabotage is static or regressive.
Try tracking what you feel for two weeks. Write it down, rate how it feels, and then figure out the next step from there. Then note what happens when you act, even if the action seems relatively small. Over time, you’ll see your pattern. You’ll also learn your “tells,” like a tight chest, or relief when you’re doing what you know you should be.
