Spaces accumulate energy over time. They’re shaped by the people who’ve lived there, the emotions that have moved through them, and even the events they’ve held. There’s a good chance that you’ve felt this yourself, especially in your own home. And like anything that accumulates, energy sometimes needs to be cleared.
If you’re already familiar with the basics, this post is for you. Here’s how to go deeper.
Before you clear anything, you need to know what you’re working with. Walk through your home slowly, room by room. Pay attention. Are there areas that you want to leave quickly? Are there neutral-feeling rooms? Do some rooms feel a little stressful or negative?
Smoke-based clearing methods like sage are good starting points, but sound is better when it comes to shifting energy in a space.
Tibetan singing bowls are excellent for this. They’re also affordable, can be found in a lot of places, and work as part of your altar or decor when you’re not using them.
Ready to start? Put your bowl in the center of a room, strike it, and let the tone move through the space. Bells, tuning forks, and even clapping in corners (where energy tends to pool and stagnate) all work in the same way. Some people use drumming, especially if they’re dealing with heavy energy.
Move through your whole home and give each room a little bit of time. If you notice that the bell seems to sound flat in a particular area, spend more time there.
There is no one-and-done when it comes to energy clearing. Energy is like dust. You clean it, and more will settle. You’ll need to rinse and repeat your clearing regularly. That’s especially true if the patterns that create the energy in the first place haven’t changed.
Layered clearing means using multiple methods one after the other. You might open with sound to break up stagnation, follow with smoke or a room spray made with frankincense or palo santo, then finish with breathwork.
Your home’s energy isn’t just a product of its history. It’s also a product of what you carry in every day and what gets created and laid down by what happens in your home (everything from arguments to gestures of affection).
Developing a transition ritual that you do every time you get home makes a big difference. A few minutes of breathing, a quick change of clothes, or even just taking a quick moment of stillness before you engage with the rest of the household can help. The point is to create a break between what you’ve been carrying and what you’re walking into.
